will downloading in FLAC and converting to MP3 defeat the purpose of downloading in FLAC format?

i am new to torrenting and audio formats but i wanted to download in FLAC because i heard it is better quality. itunes doesnt accept FLAC music so i converted it into mp3….does this defeat the purpose of downloading in FLAC in the first place? is there another way i can have better quality audio in itunes?
